'Black Widow' Review: A Fantastic MCU Debut for Florence Pugh

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

Black Widow is the latest movie to be released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz. The movie follows Natasha Romanoff in-between the events of Civil War and Infinity War. The movie starts with a little backstory on Romanoff's character. We see her as a young girl with her "family." It's not really her family, her "parents" are Russian agents and they are in Ohio to steal intel from S.H.I.E.L.D. Their mission is a success and they flee to Cuba. They are taken by Dreykov, who is the boss of Alexei (aka the Red Guardian), who was posing as the father of Natasha and Yelena. Both girls are trained in the Red Room. This room is designed to make anyone natural born killers. Their training is a success and both Natasha and Yelena become killers. Natasha escaped the Red Room a long time ago but her sister is still controlled by Dreykov. During a mission, Yelena kills a former Black Widow, but gets exposed to a gas that releases her from the control of Dreykov. Yelena returns to normal and hides in a safehouse in Budapest. I won't write anymore of the plot but I wanted to give you a general concept of the movie.

Black Widow delivers with great action. The action scenes are so nice to look at and I love that the camera didn't move while we were seeing the fights. The acting is good, but there is one person who steals the movie and it's not Scarlett Johansson. The actress I am talking about is Florence Pugh, who played Yelena. Pugh's acting is great in the film with funny, witty comebacks, but she also gets emotional when she has to. I really enjoyed her acting and seeing her develop the character. I won't spoil anything, but I have a feeling we are seeing Yelena in a certain Disney Plus show very soon and that makes me very excited. Yelena was my favorite part of the movie. I cared about her character the most because I didn't know about her story. I knew Natasha was going to survive this mission because I knew she would be in Infinity War and Endgame. With Natasha, I felt that there were no real stakes with her. I also liked David Harbour in the film as the Red Guardian. He brought light humor to the character and made the scenes he was in fun.

I really liked the "family" dynamic in the film. It makes some scenes super emotional and brings out the best acting in the film. I loved the chemistry between Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh. Their banter back in forth was really fun to watch. David Harbour provided good banter as well. I am happy Rachel Weisz had a chance to shine in a big movie. She is a great actress and deserves to be in more big movies.

The only thing I didn't like in the movie was the villain. The villain was very generic to me and had no real character development. Dreykov didn't have any layers to him. The other villain, The Taskmaster was wasted in the movie. The reveal in the movie didn't do anything for me and made the character suffer in my opinion.

Is Black Widow the best MCU movie? No, it is not. It is a good film that delivers on good action and good banter. The end credit scene gets me excited for a certain MCU show and creates more excitement around the MCU.

Rating: 3.5/5
