Christopher Nolan’s Next Movie Absolutely Must Be A Horror Film

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a financial and critical success currently on track to make $1 billion worldwide even with Spider-Man: Brand New Day competing against it and dominating the box office. Once again, one of the best directors in the industry delivered a well-received movie that will likely dominate when award season comes next winter and make a lot of money, possibly becoming his highest-grossing movie. For Nolan, The Odyssey is more proof that he can direct any genre. He did well with the comic book genre with The Dark Knight Trilogy. He did well with crime with Memento and Insomnia. He showed he can make emotional science fiction with Interstellar. He can make great history movies with Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. While Nolan has recently said he wants to take a few years off from filmmaking, fans are already curious as to what his next project will be and what genre he will do. Nolan’s next movie should be a horror movie.

Before it was announced that Christopher Nolan was directing The Odyssey back in 2024, it was rumored that one of the ideas he had in mind for a movie was a vampire period piece. If true, the idea has been on his mind for a while. A couple of years later, the horror genre is in a strong state. Horror movies from Sinners and Weapons in 2025 to Obsession and Backrooms in 2026 are doing well at the box office, and critics are praising them. Audiences, particularly younger ones between the ages of 18 and 34, are more interested in horror than any other genre, including comic book movies. Sinners also went the extra mile and got nominated for many awards, including Best Picture. Considering how well-received Nolan’s movies usually are and how well they do at the box office, this would be huge for the horror genre.

Christopher Nolan has shown in his movies that he has the potential to make a great horror movie. The Odyssey alone had great elements of horror that showed this. The sequences with the Cyclops, the sequences with Circe, and when Odysseus and his men are in Hades are perfect examples of Nolan incorporating well-filmed sequences of horror. Another great example is from Batman Begins, when Dr. Crane/Scarecrow uses his fear toxin in many scenes. Just imagine how he would do if he helmed a full-on horror movie. Horror movies also have elements of mystery and thriller in them. Nolan has done this in The Dark Knight Trilogy, Memento, The Prestige, Insomnia, and even his first movie, Following. With his style of doing more practical effects, it would be cool to see how he pulls off a horror movie relying on practical work instead of CGI.

In an interview with Fred Asquith, Christopher Nolan stated he would love to do a horror movie. He also said that to do it, he needs a compelling idea, which he has yet to have for a horror movie. He also acknowledged that The Odyssey has horror elements and believed, in some sense, that Oppenheimer is a horror movie. Nolan has also acknowledged and seems to be happy about the recent success of Backrooms and Obsession and is happy to see cinema continue to evolve.

Considering Nolan has recently said he needs a few years before making his next movie, he has time to figure out what he wants to do next. He is known for bouncing around and taking on different genres. Even if he decided to do a horror movie, there would be questions about whether it would be an original idea like Inception and Tenet or based on a previously written story like Oppenheimer and The Odyssey. Would he create a new kind of horror that is unique or take on a previously written story like Frankenstein but add in his own unique twists?

Even if Christopher Nolan doesn’t do a horror movie, fans will always be excited to see what he comes up with. Right now, fans are enjoying The Odyssey and revisiting his other amazing movies.
