'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' Review: A Sequel That Lives Up to the Hype

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the sequel to the highly successful Knives Out. Benoit Blanc is back and is on a new case. This film has a top shelf cast including: Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick, and Janelle Monae. Fans have been anticipating a sequel after how great Knives Out was. They wanted to see other mysteries Benoit Blanc can solve. But, does this sequel live up to the hype?

Glass Onion lives up to the hype. The story takes place during the Covid-19 pandemic. Friends gather on a remote island to solve the murder mystery of the island owner, Miles Bron. Bron is a billionaire who created a science company. Watching this film, you can definitely the notice who Miles Bron reminds you of in the real world. It was made fairly obvious throughout the whole film. He invites his friends on the island which include: an employee of his company, a candidate for governor, a YouTube star, a washed up model, and an ex employee who was kicked out of the company.

Glass Onion keeps the same fun vibe that Knives Out had. It has its funny moments with characters saying ridiculous things. What makes these films so great is the twists and turns throughout the film. It makes you keep guessing as to what is going to happen next. There's a twist in the middle of the film that sets up the rest of the film really well. One thing that was bad is the film makes it obvious who the killer is. Once the twist happens and things are explained more in detail you can easily figure out who the killer is. I wish there was a way to make this less obvious.

Daniel Craig shines again as Benoit Blanc. Blanc is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in all of cinema. Another standout in this film is Janelle Monae. Monae gives a breakout performance as Andi Brand, the ex employee of Miles Bron's company. You can feel the tension as soon as she arrives on the island. All she wants is the truth from her friends, but they seem to don't want to give it to her. Kate Hudson is also really good in the film. Her character is a washed up celebrity who is cancelled multiple times for saying stupid times. The characters in this film represent our modern society in a lot of ways.

The Knives Out franchise is quickly becoming one of the best franchises in Hollywood today. Its films strike a balance between fun and thrilling. This won't be the last in the franchise as a third film has been announced. It is expected to be released in 2024 with a Benoit Blanc and a whole new cast of characters. Glass Onion is a film that you should check out if you like fun and thrilling mysteries.

Grade: B+
