DC has been on quite a rollercoaster ride the last few years, but soon, a new DC universe run by James Gunn and Peter Safran will come in. While the current Writers’ and Actors’ Strikes have Hollywood on pause and some movies getting delayed, Superman: Legacy is currently scheduled to come out on July 11, 2025. News of the movie’s cast and plot was coming out before the Actors’ Strike. What do we know about this new Superman movie so far?
DCU Standing
Superman: Legacy will be the first movie of the new DCU, directed and written by James Gunn. James Gunn recently confirmed on Twitter Superman: Legacy will be the second DCU project to come out after the animated series Creatures Commando. Even though it’s the first Superman movie in this new DCU, it won’t tell an origin story, and Superman will have at least a couple of years of experience. The plot will have Superman embrace his Kryptonian heritage with his Kansas upbringing. Superman, as Clark Kent, will be working for the Daily Planet. The cover for Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman has been used a lot when talking about Superman: Legacy, but it’s unknown if the comic will be used as an influence for the upcoming movie.
The Cast
On June 27, 2023, it was announced by the Hollywood Reporter that David Corenswet will play Superman and Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane. James Gunn praised them when the news broke and called them terrific people. The movie is confirmed to have other DC characters appear. Making their first movie appearances are Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner from the Green Lantern Corp, and Metamorpho. Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific, Nathon Fillion will play Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan will play Metamorpho. Carrigan joining the cast was the last casting confirmation for the movie before the actors went on strike. Krypto the Superdog and Jimmy Olsen have been confirmed by Gunn to appear, but no castings have been announced. As for the villains, Lex Luthor has been heavily rumored. Recently, Brainiac has been rumored, but nothing has been confirmed. The group known as the Authority is rumored to appear as well. The Authority has been confirmed to get their movie after Superman: Legacy, so both movies will likely tie into each other.
Production
James Gunn said he got the draft for Superman: Legacy done before the Writers' Strike. It’s likely that once the strike is done, Gunn will go back to make changes. Filming of the movie is supposed to begin in January 2024. Depending on how long the Actors’ Strike will go, it’s likely the movie’s filming date could get postponed. This could affect the movie’s release date. If that happens, expect a possible release date for later in 2025 or 2026.
Importance of Superman: Legacy
Superman: Legacy should be considered one of the most important upcoming superhero movies in the next few years. Superman hasn’t had a solo movie since Man of Steel. Superman is one of the most popular superheroes and needs a movie. Superman: Legacy is also the first movie of the new DCU. After the problems of the DCEU and recent box office bombs, Warner Bros. and DC need a major win. If Superman: Legacy is not good and does poorly at the box office, Warner Bros. Will likely give up doing DC movies that are not Batman-related. Batman will likely keep getting movies due to the almost guaranteed success of Batman movies, but Superman and other DC heroes will no longer be a priority. James Gunn and his record with superhero movies is a promising sign that Superman: Legacy could be a good, unique movie. Despite concerns over Gunn’s style of humor possibly mixing into Superman, Gunn will no doubt make a Superman movie with a well-balanced tone. Gunn is known for having emotional moments in his movies, alongside his humor.
