Christopher Nolan has done something most directors can't do. Based on his name alone, the hype for The Odyssey has been unlike any other film in the past couple of years. With it's fantastic cast and incredible source material, The Odyssey has been hyped up to be the best film of 2026. Does it deliver on that promise?

The Odyssey comes from a story written by Homer about a soldier named Odysseus who is on a journey back home to his family. The film does a great job honoring the source material and Matt Damon as Odysseus is fantastic. There are scenes in the film where you can sense the internal struggle Odysseus is facing. The facial expressions Damon makes in the film lets you know all about what Odysseus is going through without him saying a word. Anne Hathaway as Penelope is incredible. She gives a raw performance and makes you feel every emotion. Penelope's pain of Odysseus not being home takes a toll on her and her son Telemachus played by Tom Holland. This is a Tom Holland we have never seen before. Nolan got the best out of Holland and the film should help Holland break out of the Spider Man type cast he has been in for years now.

Everything about The Odyssey is incredible. The locations picked out for this film are stunning and beautiful to see on the big screen. The cinematography is fantastic, especially in the scenes where battles and action is happening. Another thing The Odyssey does incredibly well is it's pacing. This film is about 3 hours long but it you don't feel the runtime. You feel like you're on this journey with Odysseus to get back home. It never feels boring and almost every scene in the film is important.

Other actors in the film do a great job as well. Robert Pattinson as Antinous does a great job of making you hate him. Pattinson makes the character so unlikable that you can't wait to see him fall in the end. Jon Bernthal as Menelaus is great in the film as well, especially his scenes with Holland. You can tell Bernthal and Holland are close in real life and their chemistry is evident on the big screen.

Christopher Nolan in this film dives into an element that he has never really done before. The Odyssey has some scenes that make you feel on edge and scared. Nolan has never dived into horror before but in The Odyssey he explores that genre. There's one scene in particular that is very hard to watch and leaves you uneasy. Nolan's exploration to horror in this film only leaves you wanting to see what he can actually do if he made a full horror film.

The Odyssey lives up to the hype and is arguably the best film of the year. It's pacing and story are incredible and it has incredible performances and action sequences that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Most importantly, it has characters that make you care about what is happening. Specifically with Odysseus, you want to see him make it home and reunite with his wife and son. The film makes you feel like you're on this long journey with him which makes you invested in the outcome of the story. Unlike other films, The Odyssey is not just a film. It is a journey about finding yourself and what you believe in. The film can teach us all a lesson about ourselves and what we would do if we were ever in Odysseus's situation. Nolan's films make us think and The Odyssey makes us think a lot but it also gives you an experience at the movies you've never had before.
