Episode 4 of The Last of Us had us experiencing the developing romantic relationship of Ellie and Dina. It also showed us what Ellie and Dina's first day in Seattle was like. We also saw a new character being introduced. Jeffrey Wright plays the character of Isaac, a man who betrayed FEDRA to join the WLF. This was one of the most pivotal scenes in the game so did the show get it right? Let's find out.
The Relationship of Ellie and Dina
The big story that was developed in this episode was the romantic relationship of Ellie and Dina. In the previous episode, Dina told Ellie that she was not gay and the kiss meant nothing to her. Boy, did that change in only one episode. You can see the feelings start to develop when Dina watches Ellie sing "Take on Me". The song moved Dina to tears and after that moment it was obvious Dina started to develop romantic feelings for Ellie. This all culminated in an intense scene where Ellie and Dina are being chased by Runners. Dina realizes Ellie has been bit and threatens to kill her. Ellie finally lets out her secret to Dina that she is immune to their bites. This leads to Dina admitting that she is PREGNANT in a shocking twist and an intense romance scene follows. The next morning they talk about having a life together and being a family. The romance went from 0 to 100 and has been the show's main driving force these past two episodes. Now that the romance is here, viewers should expect the focus to come back to killing Abby and the rest of the crew responsible for the death of Joel.
The Introduction of Isaac
The introduction of Isaac was shocking to viewers who haven't played the video games. We see Isaac as a part of the FEDRA chopping it up with the boys in the truck when he is confronted by a member of the WLF. In a shocking heel turn you only see in WWE, Isaac turns on FEDRA and kills all of the soldiers in the truck. Present day, we see Isaac torturing one of the Seraphites. He provides a nice monologue about his life before the apocalypse and how he wished of owning a kitchen like he does now. Even though we seen little of Isaac, we can expect him to be a major player in the upcoming episodes.
Review
This episode was a disappointing episode in the series. It's starting to get concerning how much I miss Joel. To me, Joel was the heart and soul of the show. Without him, it feels like a huge void is missing. With the slow burn of the climax of the series with Ellie and Abby, episodes like this one provide nothing but slow building to what we will get eventually. The problem was this episode didn't do enough to make viewers excited for the next one. Without that, I have nothing to look forward to next episode. Let's hope that changes next episode.
