'The Last of Us' Season 2 Episode 5: Day Two

After the subpar episode of The Last of Us, fans have been speculating about the quality of the show. Many fans have even speculated if Bella Ramsey is the still the right choice to play Ellie. She doesn't look like her or act like her from her video game adaptation. Even though Ellie is now the main protagonist, fans have resented her. They find her annoying and not like the Ellie the video game fans have loved. But, in this episode Ellie finally gets that signature moment fans from the game have been asking for.

Episode 5 Fixes The Main Problem

Leading up to this episode, the main problem after Joel dies is the lack of character development for Ellie. The writers have done a terrible job of developing Ellie's character after Joel's death. In some moments, it doesn't even feel like Joel's death really affected Ellie. Ellie has not tapped into that raw emotion and pain that comes from losing a loved one. She hasn't been angry like the fans expected her to be. Instead, the show takes the same direction of Ellie being bratty and annoying. In fact, in some moments the show makes it seem like Dina is the main character. This changes in episode 5 in what is Ellie's signature moment in the show so far. After, being chased by both the WLF and The Scars, Ellie finds the hospital and Nora, one of the members of Abby's gang. She chases Nora into a part of the hospital that is for the infected which causes Nora to slowly die. Nora explains to Ellie why Abby killed Joel. But, in a badass moment Ellie says she doesn't care why Abby killed Joel. She just wants to find Abby and kill her. She then takes lead pipe and beats Nora to death. This is the Ellie the fans were looking for all this time. She is supposed to be a badass and angry and finally the writers made that possible.

The Ending

The ending of the episode saw something different. We see Ellie at home in her bed and Joel comes in to greet her. This tells me that next week's episode will be a flashback episode of Ellie and Joel. This will be a good thing for the show because Joel is definitely missed in the show. It also is good because we might finally get a reason why Ellie was so mad at Joel at the beginning of the season. It will also further the relationship of Ellie and Joel and what each character has been through. Also, it will just be good to see Pedro Pascal on screen again.

Review

This episode was definitely better than last week's episode. It showed Ellie's badass side and made her seem like the main character again. It gave the fans what they wanted in terms of Ellie's character development. But, we still need to see more of Abby. We haven't seen her since when she killed Joel. In the game, you have the ability to play as Abby but in the show it seems like she is an afterthought. We need to know more of her story. We also need to see more of The Scars and what their motivations are and how they play into the main story. Other than that, this was a good bounce back episode that should make fans excited to see the next one.
