With the recent ending of the WGA strike, the question on everyone's mind is when will the SAG strike end? The SAG strike started on July 14. This was the day all productions in Hollywood stopped filming. Actors are not allowed to promote the films or shows they are in due to union rules. Because of both the WGA and SAG strike, major films have been delayed until 2024. Some of these films include: Dune: Part Two, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Kraven the Hunter, and more. But, with the ending of the WGA strike it's looking more optimistic for a deal to get done.
Negotiations are set to resume today between SAG and the AMPTP. SAG president Roseanne Barr is leading the negotiations for the union. Much like the WGA, SAG is looking for a fair deal. They are looking for fair pay for the actors that are struggling. They are looking for better residual checks for hit shows on streaming services. They are looking for protection from AI. All of these requirements must be met for SAG to take a deal.
There is no timetable for when the strikes will end but as negotiations restart, this could only mean good things. For a deal to get done, the studios are going to have to meet the demands of SAG. Without a deal, productions will continue to get delayed. This means all shows and movies will not film. This can hurt the studios financially because there will be no new content coming out to make money. The leaders of the studios know that they need to make a fair deal happen for both sides.
Once a deal is agreed upon, films and shows can resume production. Films like Deadpool 3, Beetlejuice 2, Gladiator 2, Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part II, and many more were shut down due to the strike. Once a deal is agreed upon, these films will resume production and many more films can start heading into pre-production, filming, or post-production.
The SAG strike looks to be ending sooner rather than later. With a fair deal, Hollywood can finally return to work and hopefully deliver us more unique content. The Movie Nerds will provide the latest updates on the SAG strike as they develop.
