On September 20, 2025, Christopher Nolan was elected the new President of the Directors Guild of America. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Nolan ran unopposed. Nolan will be succeeding Lesli Linka Glatter, who was president during the infamous 2023 actors and writers’ strikes. Unlike them, the directors were able to secure a deal without a strike. In a statement, Nolan said this is one of the greatest honors of his career.
Who is Christopher Nolan
Christopher Nolan is one of the most accomplished and universally praised directors of all time. He’s known for utilizing the 70mm format for his films. He started directing with the 1998 movie Following. Two years later, he directed Memento, a universally acclaimed film. Nolan is well known for directing The Dark Knight Trilogy, which started with Batman Begins in 2005. He was praised for bringing Batman back to greatness on the big screen. The sequel, The Dark Knight, was universally acclaimed and became the first comic book movie to surpass $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Nolan also directed great films like The Prestige and Inception in between Batman movies.
Nolan took a bold stand in 2020 to push for his film Tenet to be released in theaters and not get delayed again, and protested the idea of Tenet being released to VOD and streaming. In a post-COVID-19 world, he has continued to push for the importance of experiencing films in theaters.
Nolan’s recent movie Oppenheimer was a major box office win, got praise from critics and won a ton of awards, including Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Nolan also won his first Best Director at the Academy Awards. Nolan’s next movie, The Odyssey, is scheduled to come out on July 17, 2026. Nolan is known for casting and working with the same actors in multiple films, like Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, Matt Damon, and Anne Hathaway. Nolan also produced Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and was an executive producer on Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Most of Nolan’s movies have done well at the box office ever since the success of Batman Begins, and he is one of the few well-branded directors in the industry.
As of 2025, Christopher Nolan has two films in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. Those films are Memento and The Dark Knight. Outside of directing, Christopher Nolan has served on the DGA’s national board and Western directors’ council for a decade. Next year, Nolan will not only have his next film out in theaters, but tackle the challenge of negotiating a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The AMPTP said they look forward to working with Nolan.
