The MCU Just Found Its Spirit of Vengeance: Ryan Gosling Cast as Ghost Rider!

Marvel Studios just blew the roof off Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. In a shock reveal that no one saw coming, Marvel president Kevin Feige officially announced that three-time Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider! 

The film is officially slated for a 2028 theatrical release, and Marvel is bringing in the heavy hitters to bring this fiery antihero to life. 

A Dream Casting Years in the Making

For years, fans have begged to see the Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines star trade his stunt cars for a flaming motorcycle. As it turns out, Gosling wanted the role just as badly as the fans did. 

Taking the stage to a deafening roar from thousands of fans, Gosling couldn't hide his excitement:

"Wow. Is this really happening? As you know, this is a character I've wanted to play for a very long time." 

Kevin Feige later revealed on the panel that Gosling actually approached Marvel directly with his own unique pitch based on specific comic book runs. 

Reteaming with Deadpool & Wolverine Director Shawn Levy

Marvel isn't playing around with the creative team for this reboot. The upcoming Ghost Rider movie will be directed by Shawn Levy, who shattered box office records with Deadpool & Wolverine. 

Levy and Gosling have developed a massive creative shorthand. The duo recently wrapped production on the highly anticipated sci-fi epic Star Wars: Starfighter (hitting theaters May 28, 2027). According to Levy, the idea for Ghost Rider actually ignited while they were working together on the Star Wars set.

"We spent a lot of time last year making Starfighter," Levy told the Hall H crowd. "As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing, and I finally said, 'Bro, let's ride.' See you in 2028!" 

Jonathan Tropper is also on board to write the script, ensuring the Starfighter creative trio remains intact. 

A Fun Family Connection

Before the character rights reverted back to Marvel Studios, Nicolas Cage famously played Johnny Blaze in Sony's 2007 Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel. Starring right alongside Cage as his love interest, Roxanne Simpson, was none other than Eva Mendes—Gosling’s longtime partner. 

With Gosling now officially inheriting the mantle, he has the ultimate, seasoned Ghost Rider expert to practice his Penance Stare with at home.

The First True MCU Ghost Rider

While Gabriel Luna gave a phenomenal performance as the Robbie Reyes version of the character in ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the show's place in main MCU canon has always been up for debate. Gosling's film will mark the first time the Spirit of Vengeance is fully integrated into the main cinematic timeline.

Given Gosling's proven track record with gritty, stunt-heavy antiheros, fans are eager to see how he balances Johnny Blaze's darker, supernatural torment with the high-octane energy Shawn Levy is known for.
