Crime 101 stars Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Monica Barbaro. This film follows named Mike (Chris Hemsworth) on his last heist in the crime world. Crime 101 follows the trope of heist/crime movies of the past. It reminded me especially of The Thomas Crown Affair starring Steve McQueen. Is it as good as The Thomas Crown Affair?
The best thing about Crime 101 is the star studded cast. Hemsworth does a good job as master thief Mike and Mark Ruffalo does a good job as the detective that is chasing after him. Unlike other films, Mike follows a code for his crimes. He doesn't want anyone to get hurt and wants the crime to go as smooth as possible. Things start to go haywire when another thief comes into the picture (Barry Keoghan). Keoghan's character is young with something to prove and nothing to lose. He is reckless and doesn't care about hurting anybody. This causes problems for Mike and the people he cares about.
Crime 101 is a film that won't knock anybody's socks off. What starts off as a cool film, dwindles in the final act. It gives you the feeling of waiting for the movie to end instead of anticipating the end. The story is fine but nothing special. Crime 101 is one of those films where you can sit back and enjoy. It won't leave you on the edge of your seat to anticipate what happens next, but it will entertain through most of the runtime.
What I respect about this film is that it's a major production that is original. The story is completely original and is not tied to any previous projects, franchises, or other media. Unfortunately, these types of films are lacking in theaters today. It seems like the game is changing in Hollywood. Movie goers are clamoring for more original films in theaters. With the successful Sinners, Hollywood is starting to put more trust in these original films doing well at the box office. We will see if Crime 101 can follow the same formula of Sinners.
