The final season of Game of Thrones is one of the biggest disasters in television history. If the series ended the right way, it had the potential to be one of the greatest TV shows of all time. But, the ending ruined the legacy of the series and has changed how many fans view it. It's a shame because the first 7 seasons are some of the best television you will ever see. But, in this article we will explore what went wrong with the final season and why fans hated the ending.
The first 7 seasons of Game of Thrones are like magic. The series gets the audience to be emotionally invested in the characters and everything happening in Westeros. Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss seemed to have found the perfect way to adapt George R. R. Martin's acclaimed books. The show was also one of the most popular series of all time with seemingly everyone watching it for good reason. It was like an event every Sunday night where Thrones fans would watch the show and talk about it on social media. Everyone was wondering how this great show would end. Who would be the one to take The Iron Throne? Would the White Walkers take over Westeros? Who would die in the end? Fans were excited to find out the answers to these questions they were waiting 8 seasons for. Instead, fans received a terrible ending that left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
SPOILERS AHEAD*
The Wasted Potential of Jon Snow Being a Targaryen
At the end of season 7, we found out that Jon Snow was indeed a Targaryen. This meant that Jon was the heir to The Iron Throne. After this shocking revelation, fans were excited to see what season 8 had to offer for Jon. Surely, the writers would not waste this golden opportunity they had. But, season 8 did nothing with the fact that Jon Snow was a Targaryen. Sure, it led to Dany becoming The Mad Queen but other than that, the shocking reveal did not impact the show at all. It's like the writers had no idea what to do with Jon being a Targaryen. It also made Jon want the throne less. This was one of the biggest disappointments because it ended up being nothing that led to anything significant. This reveal should have led to Jon taking his rightful place on the throne and becoming the new King of Westeros.
The Starbucks Incident
This was a funny thing looking back but it just shows how bad the last season was. For those of you who don't know, Game of Thrones is set in a medieval time period where there is no electricity, no stores, and nothing from society today. So, can someone explain to me why there is a Starbucks cup of coffee in the middle of a scene? Did no one from the production see the Starbucks cup and take it out of the shot? Did no one in editing see the cup and think to edit it out of the scene? This just proves that the creators did not care about this last season. How can this happen in one of the best shows of all time up to that point? As soon as we saw that, us fans should have known we were in for a disastrous ending.
The White Walker Battle No One Can See
One of the most anticipated things about season 8 was the battle with the White Walkers. The White Walkers were built up throughout 7 seasons to be the destroyers of all humanity in Westeros. Fans were expecting an epic battle between the crew in Winterfell and the White Walkers, but instead we were given a battle you just couldn't see. Watching it was like watching a football game in the fog, you can't see nothing. I think someone forgot to turn on the lights on set because you couldn't see nothing. To compensate, fans had to go into their TV settings and turn the brightness all the way up to even get a glimpse of what was happening. For a show that had great cinematic production, this battle was a massive dissapointment. Also, the White Walkers didn't really do much damage except killing minor characters. For being promoted as destroyers of humanity, the White Walkers were a major dissapointment. That is what the theme of the last season is: A major dissapointment.
The Death of Cersei
Cersei was one of the most hated Game of Thrones characters. She was a fantastic villain. Lena Headey did a fantastic job of playing her and deserves major credit for the role. Her manipulative, twisted, conniving, and evil ways should warrant an epic death. But, instead we received a mediocre death that left the fans going meh. Cersei and Jamie died from being trapped and crushed in King's Landing in The Red Keep from the destruction of Dany and Drogon. Cersei deserved a better death than that. I would have loved to see Arya make her way to King's Landing and stab Cersei in her throat to cross off another name off her list. Fans were expecting something like that but instead we got Cersei being crused by rubble in The Red Keep. This was yet another major dissapointment in the final season.
Bran Becomes King
The most anticipated part of the final season was the reveal of who would be taking The Iron Throne. Fans have been speculating since season 1 of who will become King or Queen when the show ends. Many names were speculated upon, but no one could have expected what we got in the end. Bran the Broken became King of Westeros. Are we fucking serious? Bran was a supporting character in the show and for multiple episodes would not be seen in the show. Bran had no aspirations of becoming the King of Westeros. He didn't even want to be Lord of Winterfell. But, the events of the final episodes led to a council meeting where Tyrion suggests Bran should be the king because all of this started when he was pushed out of the window by Jamie. In theory, Tyrion makes a lot of sense. The events that take place in Game of Thrones would not have happened if Bran wasn't pushed out of the window. But, to make him the King of Westeros is one of the worst creative decisions of all time. Making Bran king is a spit in the face to the fans who have supported this show since day one. Making Bran king is like suddenly having Kylie Jenner become the Queen of England. It's just things that should never happen. This was the final straw for fans and their opinions of the final season. It left fans with a bad taste in their mouth and a legacy that was tarnished.
A Damaged Legacy
Game of Thrones will go down as a great show. The first 7 seasons are must watch television. But, the legacy of the show has changed. Instead of being one of the best shows of all time, it will be remembered forever as a great show with a horrible ending. It's a shame because with a good ending, this show is a masterpiece that will be remembered forever.
