Episode 7 of House of the Dragon is the best episode of the series so far. The episode delivered on everything a classic Game of Thrones episode would. It had twists and turns, a great progression of the story, and shocking moments that leave you speechless. The episode shows the aftermath of the death of Daemon's wife Laena Velaryon. The funeral only escalates the feud between the two families of Alicent and Rhaenyra. To see how the episode unfolded, let's break it down.
The episode starts with the funeral for Laena Velaryon. The saddest people at the funeral are her children, her parents, and Laenor. Daemon doesn't show too much emotion and even laughs when someone from House Velaryon is delivering the eulogy. Laenor seems to be taking it the hardest as he just sits in the ocean water crying. Corlys asks Laenor's lover to get him back to his room. Some people are doing other things at the funeral like Aegon who is using this opportunity to get drunk for the first time. Aegon keeps making fun of his brother for not having a dragon of his own. This sets Aemond off to prove himself and get a dragon.
Before that, Rhaenyra and Daemon have a conversation and Rhaenyra is pissed that Daemon left her when she was a young girl. This lead to as tender of a love scene there can be between with family members. Daemon is finally not drunk enough to have sex with his niece and they do on the beach which is an interesting place to have your first time together.
Aemond has other ideas on the beach. He finds Laena's dragon Vhagar and decides to clam Vhagar as his dragon. He takes it for a ride and almost falls of but he holds on and enjoys the ride. This wakes up Rhaenyra and Daemon's children. They confront Aemond with one of Daemon's kids saying he can't claim Vhagar because it was hers to claim after her mom's death. Aemond comes back as a new man. Riding a dragon must change you because Aemond goes from being to bullied to being the bully. He starts telling Rhaenyra's kids that they are bastards. This starts a fight between everyone. Aemond is holding his own against 4 people but the numbers game catches up to him. He doesn't just lose the fight, he loses an eye. Rhaenyra's son Luke cuts Aemond's eye out with a knife. Seeing this was shocking to say the least. All I kept thinking was how Alicent was going to respond.
As you would expect, Alicent is enraged and wants revenge. Rhaenyra says her boys were provoked by Aemond's insults of them being bastards. Viscerys does not like what he is hearing and immediately wants to know where Aemond heard this from. Aemond rats on his brother Aegon. Viscerys asks Aegon where he heard this misinformation. Aegon basically says that everyone knows that they are bastards by looking at them. Viscerys demands peace to be restored between the two families. This enrages Alicent. She wants revenge. She begs the King to do something but he won't. She suggests Hammurabi's code: an eye for an eye. Fueld by rage, Alicent steals the King's knife and lunges towards Rhaenyra's kids. Rhaenyra stops her in her tracks and a tense exchange follows. Rhaenyra says that now everyone sees Alicent for who she really is. Alicent cuts Rhaenyra's wrist and makes her bleed pretty good. Viscerys ends the meeting and demands the families to get along.
Otto is proud of her daughter for showing a side he has never seen before. He says Aemond,s sacrifice was worth it and that he would take 1,000 eyes for one dragon. Alicent regrets her actions but Otto says he finally sees her determination in winning. Laenor check in on his family and sees the destruction. He is immediately regretful he wasn;t there for his family. He says he wants to step up for his family and be the husband Rhaenyra deserves. He is willing to sacrifice his happiness for her. Rhaenyra has other plans.
Rhaenyra and Daemon talk and Rhaenyra reveals she wants to marry him. They can only marry if Laenor dies. They hatch a plan to kill Laenoror so we thought. It actually is a plan to set Laenor free form this world of politics and backstabbing. They enlists the help of Ser Qarl to execute this plan. Quarl and Laenor make it look like they are fighting each other to get attention from the House Velayron guards. Corlys and Rhaenys see a body burned and presume it to be Laenor but it isn't. At the end, we see Quarl and Laenor together at sea going to a new destination. That is the end of episode 7.
This episode was the best in the series so far. It had everything a classic Thrones episode has. Once King Viscerys dies, all hell is going to break loose. I can't wait to see Alicent and Rhaenyra go to war for the Iron Throne. Next episode should be interesting because we are going to see a time jump of at least a couple of years. The children will now be teenagers so that should create a fun interesting dynamic. This show keeps getting better and better. You can argue it is better than Game of Thrones.
Grade: A+
