A new live-action Transformers movie is in development, with Steven Spielberg back as producer and with more creative control. While he’s not 100% back, director of the first five live-action movies, Michael Bay, is in early talks to return and direct the movie. Despite the mixed to negative reviews his Transformers movies got, they were huge box-office successes. It’s currently unknown if this new movie will be a sequel to Bay’s last movie, Transformers: The Last Knight, or continue from the last live-action movie to come out, Transformers: Rise of the Beast. Whether Bay officially comes back or someone else is in the director’s chair, there is a question some fans have: What will happen with Optimus Prime?

Back in late August, Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen passed away. He voiced Optimus in various cartoons, video games, and live-action movies, including Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. For fans, it marked the end of an era. Cullen was not only the iconic voice of Optimus Prime, but also delivered many classic lines in the movies, especially the final lines of the first Michael Bay Transformers movie. Michael Bay himself loved working with Peter Cullen and shared with TMZ days after the voice actor’s passing that he cried when he learned Cullen was gone.

It’s easy to say Optimus Prime should be recast. Just because Peter Cullen passed away doesn’t mean Optimus should. Other voice actors like Garry Chalk and David Kaye voiced Optimus in cartoons after the 1980s show that Cullen first voiced Optimus in, and between the movies. In the 2024 animated movie Transformers One, Chris Hemsworth voiced Orion Pax/Optimus Prime. While Peter Cullen voicing Optimus in the live-action movies was usually consistent, various Transformers were recast. For example, Megatron was voiced by Hugo Weaving for the first three movies before his original voice actor in the 1980s cartoon, Frank Welker, took over voicing Megatron in the later movies. However, an argument could be made that this was a different scenario, as Weaving didn’t like voicing Megatron and left the role, and Peter Cullen would likely still be voicing Optimus if he were still alive.

Assuming Optimus is still in the movies, Michael Bay or whoever directs the upcoming Transformers movie will have auditions. It’s unknown if any of the previous Optimus voice actors would audition to return to the role on a bigger screen or if someone new will voice him. Personally, Chris Hemsworth’s Optimus voice sounds the most similar to Peter Cullen’s, but it’s unknown if Hemsworth would even audition to voice Optimus again in a different Transformers series. Whoever takes over the role will have big shoes to fill and likely face some backlash from fans until fans hear the new voice and are won over.

Another idea for Optimus Prime could be to pull a Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and kill Optimus offscreen and replace him with either Bumblebee or a new Autobot leader. It’s easy to understand why some fans might support this. To them, Peter Cullen is the best voice, and they don’t want anyone filling that role. Depending on whether the movie is a sequel to any of the previous live-action movies, it will be hard for fans to accept a new voice actor. Optimus Prime himself is not exempt from being killed off in movies. The Transformers: The Movie (1986) is famous for killing Optimus off and replacing him first with Ultra Magnus, then with Hot Rod, who turned into Rodimus Prime. Megatron killed Optimus in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, only for him to be brought back by Sam Witwicky, putting the Matrix of Leadership inside him. If Optimus is killed once again and this time for good, who would take charge? Bumblebee would be the most likely candidate, as he’s the most popular character in the movies after Optimus and took charge in Age of Extinction and The Last Knight when Optimus wasn’t around. Hot Rod was introduced in The Last Knight, but it doesn’t seem like he will ever be Rodimus Prime in the movies, showing no signs of being like his original counterpart. Certain characters not introduced in the movies, like Ultra Magnus, could fill the leadership role, but it depends on how they are portrayed.

As of right now, there is no release date for the new Transformers movie, so there is time to decide if they should get a new voice actor for Optimus Prime or kill him off. As mentioned before, whoever takes the role of voicing Optimus will have big shoes to fill. Do you think Optimus Prime should be recast or be killed offscreen in the upcoming Transformers movie?
