Movies have been one of the best entertainment pastimes this world has ever seen. The magic of movies is a magic that can't be replicated. Seeing a movie in a theater with a huge audience and experiencing every emotion together is a unique and awesome experience. Lately, there's been something about the movies that don't feel the same anymore. It's like every movie is the same and no movie blows you away like it once did. It's a depressing realization but it is rooted in fact, the magic of the movies is slowly dying.
Movies used to be this magical thing. You would spend money on a ticket and a bucket of popcorn and be entertained in the theater for 2 hours. It helped you escape reality and your problems. Nowadays movies all feel the same. There is no originality anymore with movies. That is why I loved Sinners so much because it brought me back to what I love most about movies. It made me feel something. It had me on the edge of my seat. I can feel everyone's emotions in the packed theater. That movie going experience was magic. But, Hollywood keeps repeating the same old stories and creating sequels for movies that came out 30 years ago. Where is the originality? Where is the creativity? It seems like that is dead now and its a shame.
What makes movies so special is the experience you get to have with your community. Like I said before, watching a movie in a packed theater is a unique and awesome experience. But, now movies are enjoyed in the comfort of your home under a warm blanket. I'm definitely not complaining about that but there's no movies that have been driving people to the theaters. Studios have been relying on sequels and other IPs to get movie goers to come back, but it's not having the impact that it should. People are tired of seeing these types of films. Look at The Running Man starring Glen Powell. This is a remake of a film that came out 38 years ago. No surprise, the film flopped with only a $27 million opening weekend. Movie goers deserves original films that will get them excited to see them and studios need to have faith in these films to put them in theaters instead of pawning them off to streaming services.
The quality of movies has significantly dipped. I can't even tell you what will win Best Picture this year at the Oscars. Imagine going from films like Psycho, Vertigo, It's A Wonderful Life etc. to the films we have today. Films today don't leave an emotional impact like films in the past did. I remember seeing It's A Wonderful Life for the first time and by the end I was full on crying. That movie left an impact on me and honestly changed my perspective on a lot of things. Movies don't do that today. I haven't had a movie make an emotional impact on me in a long time and that make me very sad. The movies of today need to change for the better.
With the over saturation of movies are streaming services like Netflix, movies today feel more like long episodes of series rather than feature films. Look at the quality movies today, it looks like it's a TV show. Movies use to have gorgeous cinematography and color gradient but that has changed. Now, it looks ordinary and nothing special. This makes it feel that the movie is not that important and nothing special. This is killing the magic of movies. They used to have a certain look to them but now they all look the same unless you're watching a Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese film. We need the look of old movies back into newer films. We need to feel like were watching something on a grand scale that can't be replicated on a TV. Movies need to feel like we have to see them in a theater instead of the comfort of our own home. I'm afraid to say it, but I don't see that need to go to the theater happening ever again.
