The Severance season 2 finale has aired and the episode has left viewers in awe. After the season 1 finale, fans knew they were in for a huge finale for season 2. But, I don't believe fans could have expected what happened in this episode. After two subpar episodes, Severance is back to it's high quality television again. The season two finale proves why Severance is the best show on television and nothing can even come close to the quality of this series.

The season 2 finale of Severance answers the big question of the season: what is cold harbor and why is it important? Cobel told innie Mark that cold harbor would be the death of Gemma and that it was essential once it was completed to help Gemma escape. If innie Mark doesn't help Gemma, she will die. But, Cobel tells innie Mark that once he helps Gemma and they escape together, it will be innie Mark's last day alive. This line creates a whirlwind effect on the rest of the episode that ends in something that you understand but breaks your heart at the same time.

SPOILERS AHEAD*

Innie Mark vs Outie Mark

This episode creates a conflict with innie Mark and outie Mark. Outie Mark is all about saving his wife and reuniting with the woman he loves. You can't blame him. If I found out, my wife was alive when I thought she was dead I would do everything I can to find her and be with her again. But, innie Mark is a little skeptical of outie Mark's plan. After innie Mark hears about him potentially dying, he doesn't want to go through with the plan to rescue Gemma. This creates an amazing scene with innie Mark and outie Mark recording videos on a camera for each other to see sharing their point of view. You can understand innie Mark's point because if he rescues Gemma, his days at Lumon are done and so is his life. Outie Mark tries to explain to innie Mark about reintegration and that innie Mark will be a part of him but innie Mark is still skeptical and frankly doesn't believe outie Mark. This leads to a finale that leaves fans shocked.

Dylan G's Epic Return

Last week's episode showed Dylan G. resigning from Lumon after heartbreak from his wife Gretchen. But, Dylan G. returns to Lumon in epic fashion. First, we see a letter from outie Dylan explaining why he's jealous of innie Dylan and shows his gratitude for him being there. Innie Dylan decides to stay at the company and turns out to be a big help to Mark in finding Gemma. He helps Helly R. trap Milchick in the bathroom so he can't turn off the innie switch. He also tell Milchick "fuck you" which always gets a kick out of me.

The Completion of Cold Harbor

The completion of Cold Harbor is met with a grand celebration. We even see an animatronic Kier which is extremely creepy. Milchick comes out to give a grand speech but the person voicing Kier can't help but dig at Milchick. Milchick fires back with a shot of his own and the dynamic of Milchick leaving Lumon is set in motion. I can definitely see that happening in season 3. This leads to a marching band you would see at your local high school and college coming in to play a song for Mark. Realizing that he has to leave, Helly R. creates a distraction by stealing Milchick's walkie talkie and flushing it down the toilet. This leads to Mark leaving the room on his search to find Gemma. Mark runs into Drummond while trying to find Gemma. They fight each other but Drummond gains the upper hand with his strength and size. Drummond chokes Mark but then the GOAT lady comes and puts a gun to Drummond's head. This gives the ability for Mark to use Drummond's key to go to Gemma's floor. While in the elevator with the gun to Drummond's throat, innie Mark changes to outie Mark and kills Drummond. It was great to see Drummond finally die. It seemed like he was a dick to everyone this season and it was satisfying to see him die.

Mark finds Gemma

The moment we have waited for since we found out Ms. Casey is Gemma has finally arrived. Mark finds Gemma in the Cold Harbor room as she was dismantling a crib. Gemma doesn't know it's Mark as she is severed to a completely different human. The evil doctor tries to convince Gemma that Mark will hurt her and that she shouldn't go with him. Gemma ignores the doctor and leaves with Mark. They leave the room and Gemma is back to who she is and in one of the most emotional scenes in the show, we finally see Mark and Gemma embrace each other after two long years. They leave up to the severed floor where innie Mark and Ms. Casey are present. Innie Mark leads Gemma out to the stairwell and Gemma walks through the door. Gemma, now herself, begs Mark to leave with her. But in that moment, innie Mark sees Helly R. and he realizes he doesn't want to leave her. He goes to Helly R. and they run down the Lumon hallway together as Gemma begs Mark to come back and the episode fades to black.

What it all means

Innie Mark's decision to stay with Helly R. is completely understandable. He doesn't want to leave the woman he loves and give up his life for his outie. But, you can't help but feel devastated for Gemma. After finally reuniting with her husband, seeing him run away with another woman has got to hurt so much even though it's not really him. I believe this will now lead to season 3 in which Gemma will burn Lumon to the ground which will result in Mark's innie dying. Now Gemma has to do what Mark did for her and get Mark out of his own prison. With the recent announcement of season 3, fans will be excited and impatient to see what happens in the series. Severance continues to prove its mainstay in television and why it is the best series right now.
