Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey is heading into theaters July 17, 2026, and is getting a lot of buzz. After Nolan’s last movie, Oppenheimer, won praise from critics and audiences, did well at the box office, making over $900 million worldwide, and won many awards, including Best Picture, fans are excited to see Nolan’s take on Homer’s ancient Greek epic. The movie stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita N’yongo, Charlize Theorin, Jon Bernthal, and Benny Safdie. Overall, Nolan’s movies are usually highly anticipated and well-received. He became a household name with The Dark Knight Trilogy, making the best Batman movies in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Even after that, his movies like Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk did well at the box office and were praised by fans and audiences. The expectation is for The Odyssey to do well and get good-to-great reviews. Yet, some fans and critics so far seem to be already hitting the panic button without seeing the full movie.
Recently, a new trailer for The Odyssey was released and got a mixed response. While the action and cinematography were praised, certain things were pointed out that have made some fans concerned. Some fans pointed out that the costumes, while they look great, seemed historically inaccurate. Some have compared the armor Benny Safdie’s character Agamemnon is wearing to the Batsuit Nolan used for his Batman movies. Fans criticized the lack of accents from the actors and how American it sounded. While no one expected all the actors to attempt ancient Greek accents, fans expected at least actors like Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland to use their British accents like other British actors have done in historic epic movies, yet even they sound a bit too American for the fans’ liking. Jokes about Matt Damon’s Boston accent being used by Damon were made. Some of the lines in the trailers were criticized, too. Pattinson using the word daddy instead of father, followed by Tom Holland saying dad instead of father, has been criticized.
Another notable thing that has gotten a mixed response is some of Nolan’s casting choices. Recently, Nolan confirmed that Lupita Nyong’o will be playing Helen of Troy. Helen of Troy is notably known as being “the most beautiful woman in the world.” Some commentators, like Matt Walsh from The Daily Wire and Elon Musk, have criticized this decision. Musk has gone so far as to accuse Nolan of prioritizing diversity over accuracy and only casting Nyong'o to win more awards. The lack of Greek actors has also been criticized.
While many of these criticisms are valid, like certain word choices and sounding too American, some feel like nitpicking. Nolan’s casting of Nyong’o as Helen of Troy isn’t the first time Nolan made a casting decision that fans weren’t thrilled about. People forget how outraged Batman fans were when Nolan cast Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight. Ledger ended up entertaining audiences and even won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. For all we know, Lupita Nyong'o could deliver an amazing performance. She’s already a beautiful actress who has given great performances in the past.
The complaints of a lack of Greek actors aren’t anything new in the industry. Even Christopher Nolan himself has faced criticisms in the past about his movies not being diverse enough. A historical epic lacking accents, while it might feel off, isn’t the end of the world. The line delivery, while it sounds weird, likely won’t ruin the movie. Nolan’s choices as to how armor and other costumes look is likely his creative choices. Differences between stories/books and movies are common, and The Odyssey will be no different. For those complaining about Nyong’o’s race being a reason she shouldn’t play Helen, people are quick to forget that Nolan, with The Dark Knight Trilogy, cast Liam Neeson as Ra’s al Ghul and Tom Hardy as Bane, and got little to no pushback for those casting decisions regarding the actors’ ethnicity being different from the characters they are playing. Fans even praised Neeson and Hardy’s performances. Lupita Nyong’o deserves a chance to show she was right for the role.
What feels off is some fans all of a sudden turning on Christopher Nolan before even seeing the final movie. This is a director who has one of the best filmographies of all time. He changed the comic book movie genre with The Dark Knight. He has shown unique ways of telling stories in movies like Memento. He has tackled various genres and delivered in them. Most of his movies have done well at the box office. His last movie, Oppenheimer, won various awards. If there is any director who has earned the trust of the audience, it’s Nolan. Besides, even if The Odyssey turns out to be a disappointment, it won’t ruin his legacy. He is the same guy who made amazing movies like Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, and The Dark Knight Trilogy. When Tenet did poorly and got mixed reviews, no one was saying Nolan was washed or that his earlier movies were bad all of a sudden. Nolan will still be regarded as one of the best directors of all time.
