Superman Sequel Set For July 2027

After Superman delivered with audiences and gave DC its first box-office victory over Marvel since 2008, James Gunn announced Superman’s next adventure. Gunn recently said in an interview that a four-film Superman saga was being planned in the DCU. It seems like Superman’s next movie is coming sooner than later. Back in August, the president of Warner Bros., David Zaslav, confirmed Gunn was already writing the next installment of the Super-Family along with directing it, according to Variety. On September 3rd, Gunn confirmed on Twitter that the next movie for Superman is called Man of Tomorrow. Its release date as of right now is July 9, 2027. Gunn will return as writer and director.

The DCU is off to a good start. Along with Superman’s success, the first DCU shows, Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, have gotten great reviews. In 2026, Supergirl and Clayface are coming out for the movies. For the shows, Lanterns is coming out the same year. It’s unknown what the plot will be, but Gunn showed on Twitter, along with the date, art from comic artist Jim Lee depicting Superman standing with Lex Luthor, who is wearing his powersuit, teasing Lex’s return and Lex wearing the powersuit. Superman looks like he is holding a screwdriver, standing next to Lex with his arms crossed, perhaps hinting that Superman helped Lex fix it up and might have to work together to face a bigger threat. Superman has a rich gallery of villains that have yet to hit the big screen, such as Brainiac. It will likely be a big villain that pushes Superman to work with Lex. No other villains or characters have been confirmed to appear as of now. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will return as Superman and Lex. Gunn mentioned in a Threads post when someone asked about Lois Lane’s role that she is important to the upcoming movie, so expect Rachel Brosnahan to return as Lois. On Instagram, Isabela Merced hinted she might return as Hawkgirl, sharing Gunn’s post in her stories and saying “See you soon”.

It’s unknown if Man of Tomorrow will also tie into next year’s movie Supergirl, or if Supergirl’s story will continue in Man of Tomorrow. It’s unknown if Superman will make an appearance in it as well before returning in Man of Tomorrow. On Threads, James Gunn confirmed in a response that Season 2 of Peacemaker will connect to Man of Tomorrow. With the 2027 confirmation, this looks to be a big year for DC as The Batman: Part II is coming out on October 1, 2027. 2027 will also have Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and Avengers: Secret Wars, setting up what could be the biggest year for comic book movies in a while. The genre’s been struggling, and 2027 could be the year for the genre to dominate the theaters again.
