Video game movies have been on the rise in recent years, and it now looks like The Legend of Zelda series is next to be adapted for the big screen. The Legend of Zelda has recently wrapped filming and is scheduled to come out on April 30, 2027. Unlike Nintendo’s other big franchise, The Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda will be a live-action adaptation produced by Sony Pictures. The movie’s director is Wes Ball, who is known for directing the Maze Runner series and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. One of the producers is Avi Arad, known for producing the Spider-Man movies since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man back in 2002. The Legend of Zelda comes out as the franchise celebrates its 40th anniversary and the release of the remastered version of the popular Zelda game, Ocarina of Time. What else do we know about this movie so far?

The Legend of Zelda will have the main protagonists, Link and Princess Zelda, and the series’ main antagonist, Ganondorf. Link will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, known for his roles in House of the Dragon, Son of a Critch, and Everything’s Going to be Great. Princess Zelda, the princess of Hyrule, will be played by Bo Bragason, who is known for her roles in Sterling Point and The Radleys. Ganondorf, the king of darkness and the Gerudo, will be played by Uli Latukefu, known for his roles in Young Rock, Alien Covenant, and Black Adam. Dichen Lachman will play Impa, who is usually Zelda’s caretaker and protector and a member of the Sheikah tribe. Other actors confirmed are Yvonne Strahovski, Lydia Peckham, and Sam Neill. This will be one of Neill’s last roles he was able to play before his death on July 13, 2026. There are rumors that Samar Weaving will be playing Goddess Hylia, who is known for safeguarding the Triforce, but Sony and Nintendo have never confirmed the rumored casting.

It’s unknown which games The Legend of Zelda will be adapted from. Many theories suggest recent games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom could be what the movie adapts from. It’s also possible that The Legend of Zelda will tell its own story with some references and Easter Eggs from other movies, focusing on the core focus of Link saving Hyrule and Princess Zelda from Ganondorf, as well as Zelda helping Link defeat Ganondorf. Filming started at the end of 2025 and finished in April 2026. Only a few set photos featuring Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda have been released, as well as the movie’s official logo during the 2026 Nintendo Direct. Filming took place in New Zealand in locations like Wellington and Glenorchy, where Peter Jackson filmed The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Legend of Zelda could be another big franchise for Sony, which is known for having Spider-Man and various other franchises. It could make as much money as The Super Mario Bros. movies. Sony is looking for another big franchise. For Nintendo, they are likely looking to see if they could adapt other games in their collection to the big screen. Some fans believe it’s a big gamble to do a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, while others are excited. Some fans aren’t big on Sony being the ones to produce and distribute the upcoming movie. Depending on The Legend of Zelda’s success, Sony could make more Zelda movies, and Nintendo could allow Universal, Sony, or another studio to make movies based on their other franchises.
