Scream 7: What We Know So Far

Scream 7 has begun filming and is scheduled to come out on February 27, 2026. The movie has faced many bumps, from the 2023 strikes to Melissa Barrera being fired by Spyglass for her tweets on the Israel-Hamas War and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett exiting the movie. Despite that, Scream 7 has found its cast and looks ready to go, with original Scream writer Kevin Williamson taking over as director.

The Cast

After Barrera’s firing, it was announced by Deadline Hollywood that Jenna Ortega was not coming back to the Scream franchise due to scheduling conflicts. Months later, original Scream star Neve Campbell announced on her Instagram account that she was coming back as Sidney Prescott, the main protagonist of the first four Scream movies, and played a supporting role in the 2022 Scream film. Campbell didn’t come back for Scream VI due to pay disputes. Around this time, Williamson was confirmed as director. Courtney Cox was also confirmed to return as Gale Weathers.

Isabel May will be appearing in Scream 7 as Sidney’s daughter. Also new to the franchise in unknown roles are Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Anna Camp, and Sam Rechnor. For a while, it was believed that Patrick Dempsey was returning to the franchise as Mark Kincaid. In January 2025, it was announced that he wouldn’t be returning and instead, Joel McHale would be playing Sidney’s husband, but as a different character, also named Mark.

Returning from Scream (2022) and Scream VI are Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown as the Meeks-Martin twins. Roger L. Jackson will once again provide the voice of Ghostface. Shortly after McHale joined the cast, it was announced that Matthew Lillard would return as Stu Macher, a fan-favorite antagonist from the first Scream film. Scott Foley, who played Scream 3 antagonist and Sidney’s half-brother Roman Bridger, was also confirmed to be returning

Possible Theories

It was exciting and confusing to hear two antagonists from previous Scream films are coming back, especially when both characters are dead. My first thought would be that they would play a similar role that Skeet Ulrich played in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, where Ulrich returned as Billy Loomis in Samantha Carpenter’s head. Perhaps they will do the same to Sidney Prescott or another character. Maybe they are returning in flashback scenes. Another theory, which would fit more so with Lillard’s character Stu than Foley’s character Roman, is that Stu secretly survived the events of Scream.

This wouldn’t be the first time the theory of Stu surviving has come up. Matthew Lillard always hinted that Stu survived and seemed open to returning to the franchise. When Lillard appeared on The Bob Bendick Podcast years ago, he said an early draft of Scream 3 had Stu survive the first film and be the real mastermind instead of Roman, planning the Ghostface killings from prison. The idea seemed to have been scrapped early on in the development stages.

Williamson originally had a draft layout of Scream 3 before leaving and Ethen Kruger took over. Williamson’s original draft had a fan club of the fictional Stab series as the ones committing the new killings in Woodsboro. Scream 3 infamously changed directions during development to be less violent after the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre, and violence in the media was blamed for motivating the killers. Perhaps the rejected Scream 3 ideas could be used in the upcoming film. A cult of Ghostface fans would make sense in this series based on the motivations of the previous Ghostface killers. Scream 7’s setting is unknown, so maybe revisiting Woodsboro is on the table.

Overall, Scream 7 has had a rough road but the casting announcements and Kevin Williamson moving from writing the original films to director make it one of the most interesting movies to come out. It’s understandable why fans are upset that Melissa Barerra got fired, and it is disappointing to see the Carpenter sisters’ arc end after two movies. At the same time, I’m glad Neve Campbell is returning and look forward to exploring Sidney Prescott’s character again, along with her family. The Scream franchise has been one of the few consistently good horror franchises. As exciting as it is to have Matthew Lillard and others return, I hope Scream 7 doesn’t rely too much on nostalgia like some movies had in recent years.
