Hollywood has seen a lot of changes throughout its time in cinema. First, was the transition from silent films to "talkies." Next, was the Hollywood studio system that dominated the golden age of cinema. Recently, the streaming services have completely changed how high-profile films are being seen. But, this year's box office could be the biggest change of all. Gen-Z filmmakers have changed the landscape of cinema and have given audiences what they truly want. Backrooms & Obsession are the two examples of this growing trend with low budgets and high box office numbers. These filmmakers aren't just young 20 something year olds, they're filmmakers who got their start on YouTube. Curry Baker & Kane Pixels are two of the hottest directors in cinema and if studios aren't careful, they'll be outperforming them for years to come.

Star Wars is one of the most iconic franchises in cinema history. The Mandalorian was a fresh new chapter on the Star Wars universe. When they announced The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, it was expected to be a huge box office hit. But, after disappointing reviews with a budget of $165 million, the film was officially the lowest grossing movie in the Star Wars universe. Compare that to Backrooms, that had a budget of $10 million and made over $350 million at the box office. Obsession outperformed both with a measly budget of $750,000 and $380 million at the box office. Now, why did a huge iconic franchise like Star Wars flop and a couple of Gen-Z filmmakers were able to dominate this summer?

Audience Demand

Audiences today are demanding something fresh and different from cinema. Backrooms and Obsession came out at the perfect time for audiences. Both films were nothing we have ever seen before. Star Wars has been around ever since the 1970s. Audiences are growing tired of the stale old product we have seen many times before. Backrooms & Obsession brought the magic of cinema back and made seeing it theaters a must. That should give studios the greenlight and not be scared of fresh new ideas.

This should give Hollywood studio executives the idea to try something new. Don't bank on the old iconic franchise and start to bank on creative fresh ideas that audiences have never seen before. Let the filmmakers do their jobs and tell compelling stories without studio interference that hinder the product. The box office tells us this is what audiences want but will Hollywood give it to us?
